The Dream Race is
of "what if?"
WHAT IF? - - you could take
the greatest thoroughbreds of
all-time and put them on the
track and let them settle
things the way horses do; at
full speed.
It is a fanciful tale as told by
Leonard, an old stable hand
who has been around horses
for most of his 90 something
years. The stories he tells are
to a young newspaper
reporter, named Allen,
gathering information for his
first column.
Allen and Leonard are
fictional characters; but the
horses and their stories are
real. Through Leonard's
stories, Allen, and the reader,
is educated about the noble
history of these horses and
the races they run.
"The Dream Race is in
heaven. Do you know what
heaven is? . . . Heaven is
Hialeah in the winter, Churchill
Downs the first Saturday in
May, it's Pimlico, its Belmont;
heaven is Saratoga in the
summer and Santa Anita in
the fall.” Leonard said.
The Dream Race is a series of
twelve paintings. Each lyrical
painting has its own story and
its chapter in the book.
It includes a variety of themes
such as the Dream Distaff
(Ladies First) featuring nine of
the greatest racing fillies
including Regret the first
winner of the Kentucky Derby
in 1915, along with Genuine
Risk (1980) and Winning
Colors (1988). These three
are the only fillies to win the
Derby. Also, in the Dream
Distaff is the undefeated filly
Personal Ensign and the tragic
legend, Ruffian.
Included are stories such as
the Calumet Dynasty in All
Good Things, the eleven Triple
Crown winners in the chapter /
painting The Fourth Crown,
the 25 years from 1948
(Citation) until 1973
(Secretariat) is told in Between
Crowns, and the story on the
perfection of Eclipse over 200
years ago.
The story of the three Arabian
stallions, which can be found in
every thoroughbred pedigree
to this day, is shared in The
Three Kings (the Byerly Turk,
the Darley Arabian, and the
Godolphin Barb.
the “what if” question is
addressed in Global Gauntlet
and features several stars of
States. These globetrotters
include Phar Lap (New
Zealand & Australia), Nijinsky
(Canada & Ireland), Sea-Bird
(England & France), Ribot
(Italy), and Shergar. This race
is set at Longchamp located
just outside Paris.
The Dream Race is more than
a series of pretty pictures and
fun stories suitable for the
whole family. The Dream Race
is a compilation of history; one
of rich heritage, glamorous
stars, and passionate people
from the owners to the trainers
to the fans.
This book is an entertaining
way of learning about the
history of racing while also
enjoying high quality artwork
and a touching story between
the relationship that develops
between this old trainer and
the young reporter. The
comment the Dream Race
generates most frequently is
that the it needs to be on
every horsemen’s shelf and
the artwork needs to be in
every collector’s home.
