| Tinting the canvas 8. The next phase of preparing the canvas is to tint the surface from the bright white to a neutral plane; neutral in color and light & dark. This allows me to work in mid tones, which will allow my lights to show up once I start the painting. Tinting begins by placing a small amount of black and raw sienna oil paints on the white canvas. Some turpentine is added to thin the paint allowing it to be easily spread. | ||||||||||||
