Painting Process

Drawing the image Although, my chosen subject matter dictates that I work from photographs, my drawings are all freehand, by personal preference. Many artists trace their line drawings from projected images, and while my method takes more time, it brings me greater satisfaction to do it this way; plus I feel I have an advanced knownledge of the subject that can only be achieved through intense study. Most of my subjects come from photographs taken by my brother at the various race tracks. This gives me as many as 20 shots of a particular race. This demo is taken from a couple of my brother’s photos taken at the 2006 Kentucky Derby won by Barbaro. I do the drawing on a separate piece of paper from the canvas for a couple of reasons, which includes being able to erase mistakes and make corrections easier. Erasing on the tinted canvas can create white spots that are better off avoided if possible. Plus, as smooth as the ultra fine is; the paper allows me to render even the most subtle of lines in the drawings, which could be lost in the tooth of the canvas. I will mark off the exact size of my canvas and built the drawing to fit perfectly into the preset size.
