Painting Process

Drawing the image My educational background consisted of mostly drawing from live models. The keys to drawing photographically are to get the right proportions and the right angles. We have all seen the cliché image of artists holding their thumbs up looking at their subject; what they are supposed to be doing is taking measurements to compare the various components in a painting to make sure their sizes relate. I do the same thing with a ruler and will find a specific ratio before I begin the drawing. For example I may convert a ¼ inch in the photo into 2 inches in the drawing. Often I begin with the rider’s cap and use that as the standard size to check every other measurement repeatedly as the drawing progresses: example – one cap length is 2.5 the length of the horse’s head or 1 cap equals 3.75 widths of the chest. I also am constantly creating plumb lines to monitor the angles of the subject and make sure that the lines intersect at the exact location where my eye sees them.
