Painting Process

Layout of the Palette The palette is mixed up at the start of every day. It takes up to 30 minutes a day to do this, but the quality of fresh paint straight out of the tube is best for optimal clean and rich results. I have experimented with ways to prolong the life of a fresh palette. I currently set my day old palette in the freezer for the night along with any brushes I have been using. I no longer clean my brushes. I have found a good quality brush that is fairly cheap. I will dispose of a brush after a couple days use. When you consider that I may use as many as 3 or 4 different size brushes on any given day you understand how it’s possible for me to go through as many as 30 brushes a week. I do this for two reasons. First, cleaning a brush is time consuming; time that I would rather spend painting. The second is that no matter how much effort I put into cleaning a brush it will never be 100% clean and the crisp point of the brush will never be what it was when it was new. Fresh paint is vital to a rich, clean colors. The middle value of the black & raw sienna blends into the palette and matches the tinted canvas.
