Painting Process

The First Layer When I begin a painting I am very aware of the process that I am going to apply. I know that I will go over every square inch of the canvas a minimum of three times and several times more than that in specific areas. With this in mind I work to get all the canvas covered as being the first major step in the application of the paint. I will usually work the background areas one complete pass before going on the horse & jockey. The reason is as simple as telling a child to eat his vegetables first before desert. I know that the main subject can easily receive a lot more attention than other areas of the painting. By working this way, I psyche up for the horse, while laying a solid foundation to assure a consistent treatment of the painting. Being right handed it’s purely pragmatic that I will work from the top left down and over to the right as I go along to keep from smudging wet spots.
